Classic and antique cars are some of the best kinds of cars to look at when you’re into showing off your ride. If you’re into these types of cars – or any car really – then you know how important it is to keep them looking clean and shiny.
While a couple of coats of wax might help get a dull paint job looking better – there’s nothing like a set of foggy, dull-looking headlights front and center on the car. If you’re trying to get your car looking 100% and the headlights are not coming out clear despite all the washing and waxing, here are a few things you might want to try.
How to Clean Foggy Headlights
The first thing you want to do is check out what your headlights are made of and if the fogginess is coming from protective film coating oxidizing as this is the most common reason.
If this is what is occurring on your car then you could try the DIY hack of cleaning them with toothpaste, it’s not likely to work on most of the issues happening with older car’s headlights but it’s worth a shot at no cost to you! Or, you can grab a headlight restoration kit from an auto parts store and follow the instructions to try and film cleaned up. The kits will typically come with a compound, cleaner, light grit sandpaper, microfiber cloth, and sealer. This could result in a shiny new set of headlights, or may not work for you.
If this method doesn’t work, you can try to use a sanding disk and buffing kit attached to a drill. Be sure you’re using a compound and grit that are appropriate and keep passing over the headlight with these and rinsing and repeating until you achieve the desired clearness.
Remember, when you’re dealing with classic cars you want to be careful not to damage or decrease the value so it’s best to work with an expert car restoration shop to ensure your ride will look great and drive terrific!
